ScottishPower announces bill reductions
02/03/2009
ScottishPower has become the latest large gas and electricity provider in the UK to announce a round of price cuts.
In common with market leaders British Gas - which announced bill reductions of up to ten per cent last month - the supplier said that changes in wholesale prices lay behind their decision.
Gas tariffs form ScottishPower are now to be cut by around 7.5 per cent and electricity by three per cent.
Kevin Still, EuroDebt director, commented: "Whilst any reductions are welcome, it is the ability of most consumers to take advantage of the savings that are key. Part of our philosophy in becoming an energy switching provider was to allow households direct and independent access to the best rates in the marketplace and to minimise the effort required to switch to the best provider meeting the client's requirements for electricity, gas or dual energy.
"If switching becomes simple and viable then it becomes more feasible to take the headline savings into account in your monthly budgeting, which is important for those struggling to make ends meet."
Willie MacDiarmid, ScottishPower's director of energy retail, said: "We are working hard to protect our customers from this volatility and ensure that we offer the best possible value and service over the longer term."
All of the UK's "big six" implemented two separate rounds of price increases last year, again citing increases in costs on wholesale gas and electricity.
ScottishPower's price cuts are to come into effect at the end of March.
