Credit card cost of Valentine's revealed

13/02/2009

Britons are using credit cards to cover the cost of Valentine's Day, new research from Halifax has found.

Figures from the provider found that its credit card customers spent an average of £42 on clothes for a Valentine's date last year. A further £43 was spent on cosmetics and £38 on shoes.

Breaking the research down by region reveals that consumers in the south-east and Scotland spent the most on flowers last February, with the average customer using their credit card to pay florist bills of £46.

Credit cards were used to buy an average £219 worth of jewellery in the south-east.

Alan Brindley, from Halifax Credit Cards, said that consumers should consider a zero per cent deal if using a card for Valentine's purchases.

"Our research shows that Brits do have big hearts when it comes to Valentine's Day, but this doesn't have to mean a broken wallet," he said. "By choosing a card with a substantial great zero per cent deal, valentine spends needn't attract any extra interest."

Similar research by Abbey has revealed that Britons are cutting back this Valentine's Day. Many are hoping to save money by spending less on presents and eating out, with 37 per cent planning to spend less on presents this year than last.
