Credit crunch arguments 'on the up'

11/02/2009

Arguments over finances between couples are becoming a much bigger problem, as the economy falls into recession.

PayPal's latest survey shows that 32 per cent of those who have previously had these disputes are now having more as a result of the credit crunch.

Mistrust over money was also revealed as a major issue between partners - with four in five now keeping separate bank accounts, an increase over 12 months ago.

However, there was better news for the one in five couples who told PayPal that the crunch had led them to talk more openly about their finances with their significant other.

Carl Scheible, managing director of PayPal UK, said: "As the recession becomes reality, British couples are facing new challenges within their relationships.

Kevin Still, EuroDebt director, added: "Financial stress is generally caused by more than one factor in family relationships and domestic finances. Being able to talk about your finances and debts is a major step forward to tackling over-indebtedness.

"Our debt advisors, who meet couples in the privacy of their own home, often find that this the first crucial step in breaking the ice and establishing a true picture of household finances."ADNFCR-1819-ID-19020559-ADNFCR
