Demand for freeze on beer duty

28/01/2009

Beer sales are slumping thanks to the financial downturn, a shock new report reveals.

The Quarterly Beer Barometer, from the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA), showed that an average 2.2 million fewer pints were drunk over October-December last year, compared with the same period in 2007.

This represents a total sales drop of over eight per cent, year on year.

BBPA also said that six pubs a day are currently closing thanks to the financial pressures caused by the lower sales.

Given that the UK officially entered recession over the same October-December 2008 period, it seems that people are becoming less willing to buy alcohol due to the economic downturn.

Commenting, BBPA chief executive Rob Hayward said: "These figures highlight the extreme economic pressures hitting Britain's beer and pub sector.

"Beer sales are sinking and many pubs are struggling to survive."

In response to the financial pressures, BBPA is calling on the government to freeze taxes on beer for the near future.ADNFCR-1819-ID-18996573-ADNFCR
