British Gas move praised

The decision of British Gas to reduce its general gas tariff costs for customers by ten per cent has been praised by a consumer group.

Consumer Focus said that the "public can be proud of" the firm - and that other member's of the UK's "big six" energy providers should now follow suit.

British Gas announced the price reduction - which was driven by recent falls in wholesale energy costs - yesterday.

Ed Mayo, chief executive of Consumer Focus, said: "We have long been critical of the way in which the six energy companies act as a herd, giving consumers little real choice. Now, we have a choice.

"We have led the campaign on energy prices since starting last October. We will now turn the heat up on the other five companies that are keeping prices sky high."

In common with other major UK energy providers, British Gas imposed two separate rounds of price hikes across 2008.

These included raising gas costs for customers on general plans by 35 per cent over the summer.
