Store offers 'credit crunch wedding dress'
15/01/2009
Thrifty lovebirds are set to take advantage of new credit crunch-inspired clothing: the £100 wedding dress ensemble.
The boomtime tradition of pushing the boat out with a lavish marriage celebration seems to be passing with the advent of the cheap attire, which is to be sold in Bhs outlets.
Included in the price is a (strapless) top, skirt and shoes - with a similar bridesmaid's outfit going for £85.
The cheap clothing stands in contrast to figures from You And Your Wedding magazine, which showed that couples pay an average of £1,000 for the wedding dress and £20,000 for the marriage celebration.
These figures seem likely to drop over the months to come, however, with the UK facing a severe recession.
Bryony Toogood, fashion editor at Brides magazine, commented: "It's an amazing deal for someone who is planning a budget wedding and wants to wear a traditional, simple dress it's a classic shape that suits most people, and looks very chic and simple.
"However, there's no denying that for £100 you won't get the quality, cut, individual touches and red-carpet treatment that a designer will offer, which is something a lot of brides-to-be want as part of the whole preparation for their wedding."
