Couples express job fears
09/01/2009
Around 33 per cent of British women harbour concerns that their partner might be laid off this year.
According to financial website callcreditcheck.com, job loss fears are growing among couples as the financial downturn continues.
This is backed up by recent official statistics from the government, showing a rise in unemployment to an eight-year high of 1.86 million.
High-profile stores including Woolworths, Zavvi and the Officers' Club have gone into administration as the UK enters recession, with the loss of thousands of jobs.
Firms such as Marks & Spencer and BT have also announced four-figure layoffs - and the overall unemployment rate is expected to rise by hundreds of thousands across 2009.
Speaking to the Press Association, Owen Roberts, head of callcreditcheck.com, said: "Arguments over money can cause real problems in a relationship and 2009 is set to be a very difficult year for many couples, especially those faced with the threat of redundancy, along with rising bills and remortgage worries."
Women aged between 35 and 44 were found to be most likely to have fears over job losses, the website revealed.
