Debt 'guide for Guides' released

The current financial turmoil has led to debt-busting tips being offered to Girl Guides, it has emerged.

Girlguiding UK decided to issue the money management guide after polling its members on their priorities.

Over nine in ten of the youngsters, perhaps influenced by recent credit crunch headlines, said that they thought managing personal finances well was important.

The leaflet tells the ten to 15-year-old guides that they should shop around for the best value current account and avoid debt by not running up high-interest store card bills.

It also offers tips on avoiding identity theft.

Denise King, chief executive of Girlguiding UK said: "As [the] UK's largest organisation providing a safe female-only space for girls and young women, we see it as our responsibility to give girls and young women the knowledge to confidently and knowledgeably deal with the new experiences they face growing up."

Financial Services Authority spokesman David Whiteley added: "This is a very helpful initiative from Girlguiding as we believe it's important for young people to learn the basics on how to manage money early on."
