Gym memberships 'to be turned in this New Year's'
31/12/2008
Brits are more worried about the credit crunch than stomach crunches - and are ditching their expensive gym memberships as a result.
According to new research from financial website Moneysupermarket.com, 56 per cent are planning to turn their cards in this New Year's - traditionally a time of high gym activity following the festive excesses.
However, memberships are estimated by the site to cost as much as £500 a year - despite just 28 per cent attending gyms regularly.
Emma Walker, head of protection at moneysupermarket.com, said: "New Year is often the time when people make promises to themselves to be healthier. Joining the gym is one way of kick-starting a healthy New Year.
"However, it is important to remember it can be a huge financial commitment, especially if you are on a tight budget."
Moneysupermarket.com also found that less than one per cent of Britons feel that they keep fit and healthy in other ways and have no intention of joining a gym.
Meanwhile, eight per cent are considering joining a gym in the New Year - despite never having been a member of one before.
