Job cut warning from business group
30/12/2008
Britons could face even more job cuts over the next year, one employment organisation has warned.
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has predicted that at least 600,000 people could lose their jobs in 2009.
Job cuts are likely to continue in to 2010 and many employees will face pay freezes, explained CIPD chief economist John Philpott.
"The CIPD's annual barometer forecast is that the UK economy will shed at least 600,000 jobs in 2009," he said.
"Overall, the 18-month period from the start of the recession in mid-2008 until the end of 2009 will witness the loss of around three quarters of a million jobs, equivalent to the total net rise in employment in the preceding three years."
The first three months of the year are expected to be the worst with 300,000 job losses predicted as part of a "winter surge".
This latest report follows predictions that unemployment will reach two million by Christmas and rise to three million next year.
