Lender calls for "financial fresh start"

29/12/2008

Britain's credit-crunched consumers should look to make a "fresh start" in their personal finances for 2009, Halifax has said.

The lender is urging customers to seek out professional financial advice next year, as they look to ride out the downturn.

According to Halifax, 53 per cent of people would go to see friends and family for guidance on their budgets, rather than a professional adviser.

Research from the firm also found that just 16 per cent have visited one in the last 12 months.

Karen Crowshaw, managing director of Halifax Financial Services, said: "Most of us religiously hit the high street for the pre-Christmas rush and the New Year January sales, but too few of us include banking products in our bargain hunting.

"By making a few small changes today and seeking the appropriate advice, you could make some significant financial gains in the future. In light of the recent financial climate, it has never been more important to seek out the best product deals available."

Halifax also said that 52 per cent of the UK population are not currently paying into a pension - and that seven in ten overestimate the income they'll get from a state pension.ADNFCR-1819-ID-18948351-ADNFCR
