Inflation for supermarket food 'holding steady'

17/12/2008

Price rises at the supermarket could finally be levelling off, according to MySupermarket.co.uk.

The industry website looks into the costs of a typical basket of groceries each month.

It found that for December the annual price rise was 21 per cent - the same as for November, the Press Association reports.

MySupermarket.co.uk's figures follow the release of the government's preferred measure of inflation, the Consumer Price Index, yesterday.

The official figures showed that annual price rises for all goods and services dropped from 4.5 per cent to 4.1 per cent last month.

MySupermarket director Johnny Stern said: "Although shoppers are yet to see an overall reduction in the cost of their food shop, there are lots of bargains out there to be had, particularly on festive treats.

"The price of staple food items has risen at the same year-on-year rate of 21 per cent in November and December. Whilst this is obviously still a large increase on the price shoppers were paying 12 months ago, it may signal that the rate of increase has reached a plateau."ADNFCR-1819-ID-18934934-ADNFCR
