Insurer issues heating emergencies warning
09/12/2008
Heating problems will be the biggest single home emergency Britons will face this winter, esure has said.
According to the insurer, which recently conducted claims analysis dating back five years on its own database, found that almost one in three of the domestic insurance-related problems are to do with heating failure.
Problems with central heating, and the repair bills that come with them, can have a severe financial impact on hard-up or indebted families - as well as being potentially dangerous.
Esure's own data suggests that call-out charges alone for heating engineers range from £44-£70 - and that's before they do any work on the heating system.
Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure home insurance, said: "Winter is the worst time for a home emergency. If your heating or plumbing does fail, it can be miserable and expensive to get professional help at short notice.
"With the onset of colder winter weather, this is the time for homeowners to put preventive measures in place early to help avoid potential disasters."
Esure also recommended, as one of its "top tips" for householders looking to avoid central heating failures, that systems should be given an annual check-up in order to keep them running smoothly.
