Queen orders cracker cutback

08/12/2008

The Christmas credit crunch is hitting budgets hard up and down the country - with even the Queen looking to economise.

A £50 price cap on all gifts and an order to re-serve all food left over from the Christmas dinner are both cost-cutting measures suggested to the royal family by the monarch this festive season, the News of the World reports.

The crunch-aware Queen has also ordered a cracker crackdown - telling upscale manufacturer Tom Smith that the royals' cracker gifts must be cheaper than usual.

Princes William and Harry have also been informed that their holidays over the Christmas period must be "low-key".

Speaking to the newspaper, an anonymous insider commented: "The directive has come from the top that the family must be in tune with the rest of the country.

"She is aware that extravagance would not be welcomed at this time."
