HMRC cuts 3,400 jobs
05/12/2008
Big job cuts are expected at HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), the UK's tax authority.
A total of 3,400 staff are to be lost by the move, which will also see the closure of 90 of the body's offices over the two years to come, the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) trade union said.
The cost-cutting has come due to the general economic slowdown in the UK, which makes a recession near-inevitable by the end of the year.
According to the government's own figures, the economy will continue to shrink throughout 2009, meaning that more and more jobs are likely to be lost as a consequence.
Mark Serwotka, the PCS general secretary, said: "In these uncertain economic times, these closures and job losses will hit businesses, the public and the communities they serve.
"Rural areas will be disproportionately hit, with face-to-face tax advice reduced to a bare minimum and quality jobs taken out of local economies."
Latest job cut announcements came yesterday from banks Nomura and Credit Suisse, who are to make cuts totalling 1,600 people.
This is also due to the slowdown, which has hit the financial services sector hard.
