Online shopping trend detected by card firm
03/12/2008
Bargain-hungry shoppers are looking to beat the credit crunch by buying goods online, credit card firm Egg has claimed.
According to a poll from the firm, 80 per cent are planning to shop on the internet this Christmas.
Six in ten also say that resisting the "urge to splurge" while out on the high street is one of the main reasons why they are shopping on the web.
Egg said that, partly as a result of this trend, festive online spending will hit £12 billion this Christmas - with sales holding up better than on the recession-hit high street.
Vanessa Wood, Spokesperson for egg, said: "Online shopping is increasingly popular. People see it as the best way to reign in their spending and resist the temptation to impulse buy.
"It is the ideal solution for those who find the Christmas crowds stressful."
Egg also said that 41 per cent of people feel that shopping online gives them "control" over their budgeting.
