Financial concerns jeopardising 'boiler safety'

20/11/2008

Many British households are so concerned about the state of their finances they are putting off having their boiler serviced, new research has shown.

According to a survey by uSwitch.com, 42 per cent of consumers have delayed their boiler check up.

A further five per cent of respondents have cancelled their heating cover policy to save money, while nearly two thirds (64 per cent) do not have any cover in place at all.

Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com, suggested that cutting back on a boiler check up was a "very tempting" but potentially dangerous strategy.

She said: "For most people sensible cutbacks, such as delaying switching the heating on and turning the temperature down slightly, will help save money without any serious side effects.

"However, not having an annual gas safety check could have some very serious consequences for both your health and your finances."

The survey also found that six in ten consumers are turning their heating down because of financial concerns.
