Financial stress 'hitting women'

20/11/2008

Women are significantly more stressed than men about financial matters, a new survey has shown.

According to research by Bupa UK Health Insurance, six in ten women fear for their finances compared to under half of men.

Around half of respondents were also found to experience stress at work as a result of the financial downturn.

This compares to just over one third of men that find themselves stressed about their finances in the workplace.

Dr Paula Franklin, deputy medical director for Bupa UK Health Insurance, said: "Women are certainly bearing the brunt of Britain's stress both at home and in the workplace, and the situation is being worsened by the impact of the credit crunch.

Dr Franklin urged those stressing about their finances to "take regular exercise, try to eat a healthy, balanced diet, reduce alcohol consumption and learn how to relax".

"Take positive action and ensure you don't become another stress statistic."

Unfortunately, recent figures from the Office of National Statistics show that unemployment has risen to 980,900 this month, which is likely to only add to people's stress.
