Takeaways on the up as workers fret over job loss
29/10/2008
Stressed British workers are turning to takeaways, as job loss and recession fears mount.
According to a new report from Just-Eat.co.uk, orders after 5pm have spiked by 236 per cent over the last six months - perhaps due to at-risk employees working overtime.
Unsurprisingly it was in London, where the credit crunch-hit financial services industry is based, where this trend was found to be the strongest.
David Buttress, chief executive of Just-Eat.co.uk said: "More people are ordering from their desk than we've ever experienced.
"Our sales to offices after 5pm have rocketed, with pizzas being particularly popular, given the ability to easily share one with minimal fuss and distraction.
According to the site, two in five UK adults has worked late over the previous month - and the same amount felt concern about unemployment due to the current economic downturn.
The number of Britons out of work is likely to rise to two million by the end of the year, analysts predict.
