UK employees facing job loss fears, stress
16/10/2008
Around one in three people are worried about losing their jobs, Bupa has revealed.
The insurer said that two in five are also experiencing increased stress at work as a direct result of the credit crunch and subsequent economic downturn.
Bupa's research comes in the wake of gloomy new government unemployment figures, which showed that 30,000 more people were claiming jobseekers' benefits over the past month.
Unemployment is expected to grow by a further 200,000 to hit two million by the end of the year - as the financial crisis leads to cutbacks in the financial, construction and retail sectors.
Dr Rebecca Small, assistant medical director for Bupa UK health insurance, said: "For employers, the onus will be on spotting the signs of employee stress early, such as uncharacteristic short temperdness or an inability to concentrate and plan work.
"Offering counselling services in the workplace, like employee assistance programmes, can help enormously."
Bupa polled residents of the UK's ten largest cities for its new poll.
