Healthy eating 'crunched' by financial crisis
02/10/2008
The credit crunch has claimed a new casualty: healthy eating.
A new poll from charity Christians Against Poverty shows that a third of people's diets have got worse over the past 12 months - with the squeeze on budgets leading people to buy more cheap fast food.
Worryingly, this figure rose to 45 per cent of 35 to 44-year-olds.
Over half (53 per cent) said that they were worse-off financially than they were last year - with 20 per cent describing the situation as "much worse".
Food price inflation is a key factor behind this budgetary strain - and also the apparent migration from expensive organic produce to cheaper alternatives.
The MySupermarket Food Inflation Index found that the cost of food and drink in major supermarkets has increased by almost six per cent over the past year, the Press Association reports.
By contrast, the general inflation rate stands at 4.7 per cent - itself a 16-year high.
