Key decision expected on 'discriminatory' retirement law
23/09/2008
A powerful adviser to the European Courts of Justice is to give his opinion on the right of bosses to fire workers aged over 65.
The court's advocate-general is set to deliver the recommendations today, which could eventually result in a change to UK working law.
For the past two years, employers have had the legal right to give over-65s the sack - even if they want to carry on working.
This has caused outrage among the forced retirees, who have bombarded employment tribunals with 260 separate cases claiming that they were unfairly dismissed.
In response, the cases have been combined, to go before the European courts for a decision.
Following the advocate-general's verdict, the judges will then consider their options - and are scheduled to give their verdict at the end of the year.
The case would then return to the British courts for a final verdict, the BBC reports.
