Personal finance classes scheme launched
12/09/2008
The government has launched the latest stage in its new financial education scheme for children, which it hopes will discourage reckless spending in the future.
In partnership with the Nationwide, the classes are to be rolled out to every primary school in the UK this year.
Secondary schools will also gain extra personal finance classes from January 2009.
The launch, which takes place at Normanton Common primary school in West Yorkshire, will be attended by minister for children Ed Balls.
Recent research from Nationwide suggests that just one third of teachers currently feel that they have enough tools and support to teach their pupils about money - a situation which could lead to many of these children following dangerous spending patterns and falling in to debt in later life.
Mr Balls said: "I believe all financial institutions have a role to play by sharing their knowledge and know-how with children, schools and parents about how to make the most of their money.
"Too many people are unsure about key financial issues in their lives and I want to see this change. It's important in the ever-changing economic world that we live in that people understand how to make the most of their money and this works best when financial education starts in schools."
