Becoming a celebrity 'number one career ambition for many'
05/09/2008
Many British teens are leaving themselves vulnerable to falling in to debt - as they dream of becoming a celebrity or "socialite" when they grow up.
Alliance & Leicester said today that this is the number-one career ambition of one in seven 16 to 21-year-olds - but warned that such aspirations do not guarantee future riches.
By contrast, just one in 20 said that they wanted to be a vet, under one in ten a nurse and just one in 100 wanted to go in to politics or charity work.
Andy Muddimer at Alliance & Leicester commented: "These days many young people are strongly influenced by the power of celebrity, and whereas 30 years ago the term celebrity' would be reserved for the likes of seasoned actors or singers, today there are many people who are simply famous for being famous.
"This is understandably appealing to some young people who may see it as a 'get rich quick' career path, but unfortunately there are never any guarantees."
