Unemployment hits new high
03/09/2008
More and more people are losing their jobs and finding themselves unable to find a new one, a new survey shows.
According to latest data from the Recruitment & Employment Confederation, sponsored by KPMG, permanent jobs available have also dropped to their lowest level since 2001.
Even more worryingly, the number of temporary jobs was also found to have fallen last month for the first time since 2003.
Overall, unemployment has climbed by 70,000 since the beginning of the year.
Alan Nolan, director at KPMG, said: "The slide in the UK economy continues to hit the jobs market hard - with yet another sharp drop in recruitment."
He added: "UK employers are continuing to control payroll costs through redundancies - and by refusing to take advantage of a growing (but increasingly unused) pool of skilled labour."
The construction and financial services sectors are anticipated to be the two areas worst-affected by the downturn.
