Scottish Power and Npower Impose New Price Rises
01/09/2008
Npower and Scottish Power have announced that they are imposing increases to many of their gas and electricity bills.
Scottish Power said that it would impose a nine per cent rise in electricity costs and a 34 per cent rise for gas.
Npower followed this announcement with one of its own, putting up prices by 14 per cent and 26 per cent respectively.
Both sets of increases are in effect from today.
Explaining the move, Npower said: "Today's price rises are due to massive increases in wholesale costs which make current pricing levels unsustainable, following a price decrease in 2007 and an increase at the start of 2008."
Willie MacDiarmid at Scottish Power added: "These are difficult times and we understand the financial impact this announcement will have on our customers."
Speaking to the BBC, Adam Scorer at Energywatch said that ministers would now be under pressure from consumers to make energy bills more affordable for the less well-off.
"There is strong expectation that the government will shortly announce a raft of measures to protect the most vulnerable," he claimed.
