TUC points out unemployment fears

28/08/2008

Three million British workers are worried that they will lose their jobs in the economic downturn, the Trade Unions Congress (TUC) said today.

According to the representative body, a total of 13 per cent of the entire workforce have job concerns - with Welsh and Scottish employees the least optimistic.

The TUC also said that those in low-paid work were more worried about becoming unemployed than people who were more well-off.

TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said: "These poll findings show just how many people are getting worried about losing their job in the current economic slowdown.

"Of course this does not mean that unemployment will rise by anything like three million, but it does show just how jittery people have become about the economy and their own job."

The TUC also found that members of trade unions were more confident about the jobs market than non-members, with almost 48 per cent believing it very likely that they would not be forced to leave within a year.

Among non-members, this figure stood at just 40 per cent.ADNFCR-1819-ID-18753237-ADNFCR
