Unemployment on the up as calls to helpline surge

27/08/2008

More and more people are likely to be made redundant over months to come, new figures suggest.

According to Lawphone, the helpline run by insurers Allianz, a record number of calls was received last month on employment-related issues.

In total, one third of all calls to the helpline have been related to redundancies, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Over the same month last year, this proportion stood at just 2.4 per cent.

Ian George, senior solicitor at Allianz Legal Protection, said: "We are seeing an unprecedented number of redundancy-related calls."

He added: "It started off in the transport and logistics sectors and has seen rapid growth across the UK, and clearly reflects the current economic environment."

Across the financial services and construction sectors alone, more than 10,000 people have lost their jobs since the end of June.

The credit crunch, which has put many companies' balance sheets under severe strain, has been blamed for the rising unemployment totals.ADNFCR-1819-ID-18750805-ADNFCR
