WI gives tips on thrift

19/08/2008

Britons struggling to avoid falling in to debt have received some sound advice from the Women's Institute (WI), the Times reports.

The charity has issued no-nonsense advice on leading a more thrifty lifestyle, as rising inflation and tightening credit put the squeeze on many peoples' personal finances.

Planning shopping trips in advance, using kitchen leftovers in other dishes and topping up washing-up liquid bottles with water when they are half-empty are all "top tips" which have been used by WI members for years.

The charity also advises using boiling salted water as a weedkiller, lemons as cleaning products and keeping a thermos by the kettle - so that left-over boiled water can be used for washing-up later on.

According to the WI, it is receiving rising levels of applications to join from younger women keen on learning money-saving skills such as knitting, darning clothes and cooking on a budget.

Kevin Still, EuroDebt director, commented: “Economising and budgeting are two key life skills that need to be encouraged for both women and men alike, young or old.

"Self-catering, DIY and long forgotten domestic science and technical engineering skills will be necessary to balance the books for many.”

Sue Bridger, a course instructor at the charity, added: "As well as being useful, domestic science can help to save money, but now we have two generations of children who have not been taught even the basics.

"We are losing vital life skills."ADNFCR-1819-ID-18739280-ADNFCR
