Kerry gets extra time to pay off bills
08/08/2008
TV star Kerry Katona has been given an extra two weeks to pay off her tax bill and avoid bankruptcy.
The I'm A Celebrity winner has £157,000 left to pay to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), and was granted the "short adjournment" at London's High Court yesterday.
Kerry, who has been struggling with debt, was originally issued with a bankruptcy petition in January.
The deadline now passes on August 21st, and she is likely to be declared bankrupt if she has not paid up by this time.
However, HMRC also reserves the right to dismiss the petition if it sees fit, under UK law.
Her lawyer, Luke Harris, asked the presiding judge for "one final indulgence" in allowing the star to make good her debts.
Responding, Mr Registrar Nicholls said: "I am going to mark [this delay] final.
"Bankruptcy petitions are not to be held over someone's head indefinitely."
Kerry, 27, was not in court.
