Fuel costs 'higher in UK'
07/08/2008
It's official: Britons pay more for their fuel than people living in other European countries.
New research from price comparison site uSwitch found that the average UK per-litre cost of 119p easily exceeds that of Spain, Germany, France and Italy.
In fact, fuel costs have been 20 per cent higher over the past eight years in Britain than in these other four countries.
The study also showed that people pay around £1,750 on petrol or diesel each year.
Mark Monteiro, insurance expert at uSwitch, said: "Cash-strapped consumers are juggling price increases across all fronts. Petrol prices are yet another rising cost to contend with, adding further strain to already stretched finances.
"As a direct result of these high prices it would be no surprise to see motorists leaving their cars at home and using other methods of transport. However, drivers who are reliant on their cars for business or live in remote areas will be hardest hit. For them, leaving the car at home is not an option."
