Experts give tips on cutting energy bills
04/08/2008
Britons can cut their energy bills by £300 by shopping around for the best deal, a newspaper investigation has revealed.
According to the Guardian, which asked several price comparison sites for tips on reducing bills, savvy customers can play the market to counteract the recent price hikes that have been enforced by Britain's energy providers.
Cutting down on energy use, switching to dual fuel and taking out a "capped", or price-guaranteed, tariff all came recommended.
Energy firms EDF and British Gas have already increased some tariffs by up to 35 per cent over recent weeks - with other firms set to follow in weeks to come.
Joe Malinowski at TheEnergyshop.com, a site which encourages customers to shop around for the best energy deal, said that taking out an online rather than a capped deal was the way to go for customers.
"Now most of the longest capped deals have gone, there's a case for staying on the lowest internet-only deals and see how things work out," he told the newspaper.
Ann Robinson at price comparison website uSwitch added that big savings could be had by cutting energy use.
She said: "Consumers should begin to make the adjustment now by cutting their energy usage and making sure they are paying the cheapest available price for what they are using.
"This will help limit the impact of soaring energy prices."
