British Gas imposes 35% bill rise

31/07/2008

British Gas has hiked gas bills by an unprecedented 35 per cent yesterday.

The energy provider, which also increased electricity costs for customers by nine per cent, has been fiercely criticised by charities for the move.

On average, an extra £261 will be paid by the firm's customers - bringing the annual household bill to over £1,300.

British Gas managing director Phil Bentley said: "We very much regret that we have had to make this decision at a time when many household budgets are already under pressure."

He added: "The simple fact though is that we have entered an era of unprecedented high world energy prices."

The director also indicated that the firm will not impose any more increases in 2008.

British Gas' move follows EDF's decision last week to put up gas and electricity plans by 22 and 17 per cent respectively.

Other providers are anticipated to follow in the days and weeks to come.ADNFCR-1819-ID-18710792-ADNFCR
